What Hiring Managers Look For

Software engineering hiring managers care about three things above all else: can you build systems that scale, can you work effectively in a team, and can you ship reliably? Your resume needs to demonstrate all three.

The biggest mistake software engineers make is listing technologies without context. "Proficient in Python" tells a hiring manager nothing. "Built a data pipeline in Python that processes 2M events/day with 99.9% uptime" tells them everything. Every bullet should follow the pattern: what you built, how you built it, and what impact it had.

ATS systems parse your resume before a human ever sees it. They scan for exact keyword matches against the job description. If the posting says "Kubernetes" and your resume says "container orchestration," you might not make it through. Mirror the job description's language exactly — then back it up with specifics.

Remote work has changed what hiring managers look for. Async communication skills, documentation habits, and the ability to work independently now matter as much as technical depth. If you have remote experience, call it out explicitly.

Finally, quantify everything. "Improved performance" is vague. "Reduced API latency from 450ms to 120ms by implementing Redis caching, serving 50K daily requests" is specific, credible, and memorable.

Example Tailored Bullets

Here's what strong, ATS-optimized bullets look like for software engineer roles:

Architected and deployed a microservices platform serving 2M+ daily API requests with 99.95% uptime across 12 services on AWS ECS.
Reduced deployment cycle from 2 weeks to same-day by implementing CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions, Docker, and automated integration testing.
Led migration from monolithic PostgreSQL to distributed event-driven architecture, cutting query latency by 65% and enabling horizontal scaling.
Mentored 4 junior engineers through structured code reviews and pair programming, with 3 promoted to mid-level within 12 months.
Designed and shipped a real-time notification system using WebSockets and Redis pub/sub, handling 500K concurrent connections.
